Vétiver roots is the raw materials used to create good handmade products such as placemats, hats, fruit baskets, rugs, wall decorations as Tahiana Creation does.
The vetiver plant, scientifically called vetiveria zizaninoîdes, known also as the “cuscus grass” is from the gramineae family of plants. It is typically harvested by the Indians but grows well in tropical areas and subtropical places like Madagascar.
Vetiver is traditionally used for roofing by Malagasy people. It have a winding root which can be 6 meters depth. Vetiver is a plant with countless virtues and unique properties. It is very pleasantly aromatic.
After being dug up, the vetiver root is washed and then dried naturally. To keep its natural scent, craftsmen do not tint the roots, but usually weave it with cotton to make handcrafts.
Vetiver is also converted into oils and tinctures and its essence is mainly used to make perfume. It also protects the the soil against erosion and very useful to purify waters. In Madagascar, the utilisation of the Vetiver root for handcrafts and decoration is a recent function.
Other therapeutic virtues: to help blood circulation: phlebitis, varicose veins and edema. It is also an excellent anti-inflammatory in some case and is used for treating anxiety.
